We collected $100 non-refundable from all members early on giving them a choice of their rotation, this was in addition to the registration fee which was already paid in full. The $100 was for vans, gas, food, etc. Everyone paid their own hotel costs. We rented vans from the finish in Asheville and drove to the start. Out of 12 original runners, we had 6 drop out, so recruit alternates and drivers early. One of our drivers became a runner when an injury occurred one week before the race. Have a road atlas in each van, GPS does not work in some of these areas and when your vans are leap frogging, you need to be clear of where you are. One big thing that worked for us was having everyone estimate their times for each leg, then we could have the next runner fully ready to go when they arrived at each transition. We also had a "van book" with each leg description, etc. laminated and all directions clearly accessible.

Do we know yet what the race dates are for 2010?

seejanerun recommends Nation's Inn in West Jefferson. It's ~45 from the start and full or Relay teams. We've stayed there two years now. www.nationsinn.com

Been Team Captain for 4 years now. Registration will probably open up in October sometime. It does not fill up very quickly. 2009 was the first year it reached capacity, so it may fill up quicker. Try to be registered by April-May for a definite spot. I expect registration fees to remain the same unless changes to the race are made. It is currently $75 per runner based on a 12 runner team. Most other relays charge $90+ per runner. Start recruiting a little now so you know the interest level you may have. Try to narrow down team committments whenever you register (April). Check out the Relay Logistics page on website. Full of information you are seeking. One additional note: Our team has always stayed the night before at Days Inn in Abingdon, VA. It's only 50 minutes from the start and rates are usually $50-$60 per room.

I know 2009 just finished up but I have some questions for 2010.

1. When will registration open?
2. How quickly does registration fill up?
3. Are registration fees going to be the same?
4. How early should I start recruiting runners?
5. What is the best way to collect money from team members? All at once? Broken up in to payments?
6. Where is the best place to stay the night before?
7. What's the average van rental cost?
8. Is there a captain's checklist of things to remember posted anywhere?

Thanks for any input you veterans can provide. I am chomping at the bit to start getting organized for the 2010 race.
